Yi Lu Chang Chuan - ‘Long Fist’

Introduction

Depending on your school, students following the Kung Fu syllabus, may encounter Yi Lu from Long Fist, or 'Changquan'.

What is Changquan?

Changquan (/tʃɑːŋ.tʃuən/) (simplified Chinese: 长拳; traditional Chinese: 長拳; pinyin: chángquán; lit. 'Long Fist') refers to a family of external (as opposed to internal) martial arts(kung fu) styles from Northern China.

The forms of the Long Fist style emphasize fully extended kicks and striking techniques, and by appearance would be considered a long-range fighting system. In some Long Fist styles the motto is that "the best defense is a strong offense," in which case the practitioner launches a preemptive attack so aggressive that it deprives the opponent of the opportunity to attack. Others emphasize defense over offense, noting that nearly all techniques in Long Fist forms are counters to attacks. Long Fist uses large, extended, circular movements to improve overall body mobility in the muscles, tendons, and joints. Advanced Long Fist techniques include qin na joint-locking techniques and shuai jiao throws and takedowns.

Sequence of steps in the Yi Lu Changquan form.

Yi Lu Chang Chuan is the foundation set of all Chang Chuan, used to teach students most of the stances and co-ordination needed for them to progress in their study of the Martial Arts. Therefore students must put most effort into this set.

Yi Lu Form

I do my best here to write down the moves in terms that make sense to me - apologies in advance if I make errors or incorrect assumptions.

You will find video of this form on YouTube executed at a pretty fast pace, linking sets of steps into bursts. I am still working through this at a slower pace and it it’s been said I have ’taijed’ it!

The Form as described here is not intended to substitute for instruction by an experienced teacher, but is presented as an aide memoire for students learning the form or seeking a refresher. There is no intent here to describe application, for example, in self defence.

Notes

  1. L = Left, R = Left
  2. Cardinal points are used to describe the direction to face or to turn, e.g. N, S, W, E, SE etc.
  3. Punches use the first vertically
  4. When fists are on the hip, they are palm up
  5. Kicks are described as using the ‘toe’, but may in application, depending on footwear, be best applied with the toes pulled back, and so use the ball of the foot
  6. I have not attempted to match my ’steps’ to those of the accompanying images, but rather to the way the steps flow in my mind
